CHAPTER EIGHT

Dunlop studied Edwin as most of the tables were broken down to allow for dancing. The man had been stabbed six days before and had recovered enough to attend this last celebration as long as he remained seated. The festivities should have been a couple days prior in conjunction with the completion of the harvest, but Laird Colin had waited until the young Donovan could come to the event. Dunlop knew his laird did not especially want the feast to be a celebration of Mahon’s arrival as it had been unexpected and disruptive, but not to have even a small one would strain a currently strong relationship.

All those there really had come to celebrate Lammas. Starting tomorrow, the farmers would be back at their fields, preparing the land for winter crops. The next large, clan-inclusive celebration would not happen until the Feast of Jesus’s Nativity.

Dunlop shook his head in disgust as he watched Brodie sitting near the front table, holding Shinae on his lap, forcing her to watch and not participate in any of the activities. Several men had started to approach them, but they all just as quickly turned and walked away to find another dance partner without saying a word. Taveon had tried several times and finally succumbed to staring at her from across the room. The man’s ungentlemanly behavior was on full display and he obviously did not care.

Brodie had gone with Shinae during her visits to check on Edwin, and even sat in the room when visiting with the McTiernay wives. Dunlop suspected his friend’s deplorable actions only infused her with resolve, for if anyone was as stubborn as Brodie, it was his wife. How Brodie had not seen that yet was truly bewildering.

Joyful laughter filled the great hall, and Dunlop immediately turned and stared at the bewitching redhead as she enjoyed herself. Her smile, her laughter, her delight at being at Lochlen could not be mistaken as anything but genuine.

A sweet-looking female headed his way with a coy expression that in the past would have had his full attention. Now, all Dunlop knew was that she was blocking his view. With a frown and a swish of his hand, he dismissed her and, thankfully, she took the hint and moved on to someone else.

The great hall was full of boisterous men and women. All had been invited, from Colin’s soldiers to swordsmiths to candlemakers and seamstresses. Most could not fit inside the great hall so people were constantly moving in and out of the room, repeatedly interfering with his ability to watch Isilmë from across the room. When Dunlop could finally see the other side, he snarled.

Now it was Callum who was with her.

He must have just returned to her side, for he was handing Isilmë a mug of ale with a big flashy smile. The
